In heavy-duty industrial refrigeration systems and multi-circuit cold storage chillers, Hanbell RC2 series semi-hermetic screw compressors rely on a hydraulically driven slide valve to adjust capacity between 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% (or achieve continuous stepless regulation).
When a slide valve gets stuck or cannot load properly, the compressor either remains locked at minimum displacement, or struggles to meet the required cooling load. To resolve capacity modulation failures, you need to systematically check and evaluate the hydraulic oil pressure difference, solenoid coil status, and mechanical clearance of the slide channel.
Diagnosing Hydraulic Circuit and Solenoid Actuation Failures
The slide valve piston is driven by high-pressure oil drawn from the oil separator. When a capacity increase is requested, the loading solenoid valve opens, routing pressurized lubricant into the hydraulic cylinder to push the slide valve forward along the rotor bore.
If the compressor cannot increase capacity even when it receives a normal electrical signal from the main controller, check for the following root causes:
Identifying Mechanical Jamming and Slide Channel Scoring
If the solenoid valves activate correctly and the oil pressure meets the minimum specification, the fault is most likely caused by mechanical friction inside the rotor casing that blocks the slide valve movement. Common causes include:
Field Recovery Protocol and Preventative Compressor Maintenance
When you encounter a stuck slide valve on site, follow this structured recovery sequence before removing the compressor for a full overhaul:
