When a semi-hermetic refrigeration compressor suffers a stator winding burnout, motor varnish and polyolester (POE) oil decompose under intense electrical arc heat. This reaction releases hydrofluoric acid, sludge, and carbon deposits throughout the system.
Simply dropping a replacement Copeland Discus or Reed compressor into an an acid-laden circuit will destroy the new motor windings within weeks. Cleaning the system thoroughly before startup is non-negotiable.
Before touching the new unit, establish the contamination severity by testing the dead compressor's oil. Draw an oil sample and test its Total Acid Number (TAN). A reading above 0.1 mg KOH/g indicates a severe burnout, requiring a full system flush.
Trapping residual moisture and trace acids requires specialized filtration hardware on the suction line. Standard liquid line filter-driers are not enough.
Install a temporary suction burnout filter-drier fitted with an 80% activated alumina and 20% molecular sieve core just upstream of the compressor suction service valve. This high-alumina blend aggressively absorbs inorganic acids before they reach the crankcase.

Once the replacement unit is charged with fresh POE oil and refrigerant, monitor the system closely during initial commissioning.
